Peugeot Pepper mill peppercorn size

8th July 2011 13:55

Q Please give me some advice. I have just purchased a Peugeot pepper mill but to my amazement, it does not grind? I have a feeling that one may need to use a specific size of pepper corn for this to work? Is this true? One would think a pepper corn is a pepper corn that nature produces in different sizes? Please give some clarification and also some direction as to the size and brand of pepper to purchase? Thanks in advance of you reply!!

A I am sorry about the problems with your Peugeot pepper mill. I confirm that it is a good idea to check the type of salt and pepper that you are using in your mills:

  • Salt mills - should be using dry rock or sea salt crystals NOT wet sea salt like Maldon which can clog the mechanism
  • Pepper mills - should be standard, hard black peppercorns which are usually no more than 5mm across. Large or soft peppecorns can clog the mechanism or cause intermittent grinding

We sometimes find that even when using the correct peppercorns, a slightly larger, rogue peppercorn can get trapped in the grind chamber causing intermittent grind problems. I suggest you empty the chamber and give the base a good firm tap to see if anything has become lodged in there.

Another thing to try is to check that the knob on the top of the mill is not too tight. Often a small adjustment here can make the world of difference.

I hope this will help resolve your problem but if you do need anything further then please let me know.

Best - Claire
