If you are changing your grind selection from a fine to quite a coarse grind in a single change - like moving from gear 2 to gear 5 on the car by way of anology - then sometimes peppercorns can get caught in the U select mechanism. If this happens all you need to do is turn the selection bar to a mid setting, grind a little, and this will release the jam.
